David Weiss: Works, 1968-1979

SoHo’s Swiss Institute is currently exhibiting David Weiss’ eclectic and colorful sketches and paintings in  “David Weiss: Works, 1968-1979.” 1968- 1917 were important years for Weiss as an artist as they mark the last years he worked by himself, before he began working with Peter Fischli. In this exhibit, we get a unique view of his personal notebooks as well as many of his other early works.

The exhibition shows how diverse of an artist Weiss was: incredibly detailed and tiny sketches reminiscent of cartoons and larger-than-life paintings with clean lines and simple compositions show Weiss’ capacity to create a distinct portfolio. There are witty cartoons that have text attached, as well as flowers with faces that smoke cigarettes and converse with each other, which are both amusing and bizarre. He consistently used color in a very simple way: always choosing bright colors but never using too many colors in one work.

Many of the works exhibited share the common theme of city life. The bright lights, that every city dweller knows well, serve as a motif in works both small and large. In several works we see a string of colorful lights (of perhaps cars, buildings, or billboards) brighten up an otherwise completely dark landscape. A large work (“Untitled”) is represented in several different color schemes and it shows streetlamps illuminating a barren street as a string of cars drive by. Depicting this work in several different colors gives a playful tone to an otherwise bleak work. However, many of the works displayed are quite playful and lively. A vibe from the 1960s is definitely present: smiling flowers, bright colors, and bold patterns are scattered throughout the gallery.

We also get a very intimate look into many of the journals of Weiss, which are displayed at this exhibit for the first time since his death in 2012. Through his many notebooks, we have the chance to see hundreds of his sketches. The sketches are all small, but extremely detailed and precise. They are simple in their lack of color, but extremely complex and complicated in their attention to specific details and their content. Weiss drew, for example, small café scenes without missing a single element: the chairs, the waiters, the plates, the customers, everything is thoroughly detailed. There are also many sketches that have a more bizarre, dreamlike content, that when looked at consecutively have a narrative. 

The Swiss Institute has assembled a unique collection of Weiss’ early works that show that Weiss was an extremely prolific artist before he began to work with Fischli. Weiss was constantly experimenting with scale, color, and the use text in his works, but despite this, he had a distinct, recognizable style.

Le Swiss Institute à SoHo expose maintenant les éclectiques et colorés peintures et croquis de David Weiss dans « David Weiss : Works, 1968-1979. » 1968-1979, des années importantes pour Weiss parce qu’elles furent les dernières années où il travailla seul, avant de d’associer avec Peter Fischli. Dans cette exposition, nous avons une vue unique des cahiers et ses premières œuvres.

L’exposition montre que Weiss était un artiste très divers : des croquis incroyablement détaillées qui sont comme des dessins animés et de très grandes peintures qui ont des lignes propres et des compositions simples montrent la capacité de Weiss à créer un portfolio distinct. Il y a des dessins animés pleins d’esprit avec le texte et aussi des fleurs avec des visages qui fument et discutent ensemble,  bizarres et drôles. Il a toujours utilisé la couleur d’une manière très simple : il choisit toujours des couleurs vives, mais il n’ utilise que très peu de couleurs dans une œuvre.

Plusieurs œuvres exposées partagent le thème de la vie dans les grandes villes. Les lumières vives, que chaque citadin connaît bien, sont un motif récurrent. Dans plusieurs œuvres nous voyons une chaîne de lumières colorées (peut-être des voitures, des bâtiments, ou des panneaux d’affichage) égayant un paysage autrement complètement sombre. Une grande œuvre (« Untitled ») est représentée  avec  différentes couleurs et montre  des lampadaires éclairant une rue stérile où les voitures roulent. Le choix de créer cette œuvre dans plusieurs couleurs donne un ton léger et vivant à une œuvre morne. Beaucoup d’œuvres exposées sont légères. Une ambiance des années 1960s est présents : des fleurs souriantes, des couleurs vives et des motifs audacieux sont dans la galerie.

Nous obtenons une vue intime dans plusieurs cahiers de Weiss, qui sont exposés pour la première fois après sa mort en 2012. Nous avons l’occasion de voir  ses croquis. Les croquis sont toujours petits, mais sont très détaillés et précis. Ils n’utilisent pas de la couleur, mais ils sont complexes et compliqués. Weiss a dessiné, par exemple, des petites scènes au café et tous les éléments sont là et précis : des chaises, des serveurs, des assiettes, des clients, tous sont complètement détaillés. Il y a aussi de nombreux croquis qui ont un contenu onirique et plus bizarre et quand on les regarde consécutivement, il y a un récit.

Le Swiss Institute expose une collection unique des premières œuvres de Weiss qui montrent que Weiss était un artiste prolifique avant qu’il ait commencé à travailler avec Fischli. Weiss expérimentait sans cesse avec l’échelle, la couleur et le texte dans ses œuvres, mais malgré cela, il avait un style reconnaissable et distincte.
