On a sunny Monday, I stroll through Kris Ruhs’s magical “Hanging Garden” at the Galerie Alaïa; at the Théâtre Antoine I laugh out loud listening to Catherine Frot’s jokes in “Fleur de cactus;” I think of the complex book by Sylvie Bourgeois “J’aime ton mari;” and I take note of an auction’s return to the Salon de Montrouge, as well as an exhibition by Benjamin Renoux.

In his witty autobiography, British expatriate Peter Mayle details his experience as a foreigner living in Provence, a region in the south of France where the concept of rushing seems not to exist. With his sharp humor and lively voice, he recounts memories charming and frustrating, ranging from the local passion for food and drink to the seemingly endless process of renovating a house. Though his book will surely inspire adventurous souls to travel to the region themselves, Mayle evokes the essence of a true Provençale lifestyle so as to place the reader right in the center of the action without them ever having to leave home…

A moins que cela ne leur plaise pas tant que ça que moi, la marginale, celle dont ils se moquent régulièrement, j’empiète sur leurs plates-bandes de gens normaux ? »

 

Emma, a modern-age Cinderella, finds herself at her sister’s wedding, adored by a business tycoon…an unbearable mother; pretentious, heartless sisters, and a rich future husband surround the heroine, or rather they seek to remove this “ugly duckling” from their lives.

 

In this satirical comedy, Sylvie Bourgeois depicts things humorously, but also with great sensitivity regarding the sad reality of this young woman who is convinced that intelligence carries more weight than appearance. But this lightness does not mean forgetting the topics that are close to the author’s heart, such as ecology.

 

The film adaptation of J’aime ton mari is currently in the works.

Exhibition by Kris Ruhs – “Hanging Garden” at the Galerie Alaïa

 

“My shapes are not necessarily from my dreams in any sense consciously or not consciously. I create different things in my dreams than I do in my daily life. My dreams are just hallucinations that never end. I can never create that. A dream is a dream. Anytime you enter a world of dream you can push yourself to any boundary. You can go anywhere. There are no guidelines to hold you back. You can take something to the depths of the deepest ocean, it’s another world in your dreams.”

 

At the Galerie Azzedine Alaïa, we are caught up in the wonderful world of Kris Ruhs. The artist has devised a hanging garden of stylized foliage in gold metal and porcelain flowers made by hand, all filed one by one in their receptacle by Alaïa himself, and by his workshop. And now it’s your turn to walk through this Garden of Eden and to lose yourself in the labyrinth of your imagination…

 

Kris Ruhs was born in 1952 in New York. This is the artist’s first exhibition in Paris.

 

On this occasion, a very lovely book was published in 1,000 copies, and each volume is numbered accordingly.

Artist – Benjamin Renoux

 

Born in 1986 on the Ivory Coast, Benjamin Renoux studied cinema and art history in Paris and San Francisco, and more recently at Central St. Martins in London.

I had spotted him before the Salon de Montrouge, and he spoke to me about his work.

Benjamin Renoux invents photo videos with ghosts whose silhouettes appear and become entrenched in family portraits, defying time, a destroyed monument like Nimrod in Iraq…they’re like round trips through the past and the present, illustrating its own history.
