What better way to spend a rainy Monday morning than consuming croissants and espresso in an artist’s atelier? It would appear that my Parisian alter ego starts her weeks off in just this manner – or at least it started that way last week, when I attended at a breakfast hosted by Ivan Messac at his own painting-lined studio in the 11th arrondissement.

Quelle plus belle manière de passer un Lundi matin pluvieux , que de déguster croissant et café dans un atelier d’Artiste? C’est exactement ce qui m’est arrivé la semaine dernière en prennant mon petit déjeuner dans l’atelier de peinture d’Ivan Messac dans le 11 ème arrondissement de Paris.

A painter, sculptor, and set and costume designer, Mr. Messac’s career is not one that’s easily pinned down. His works range from simplistic, sturdy abstract marble sculptures to whimsical costumes and set created for the Ballet de Théàtre Contemporain’s 1973 production of _____. Today, it’s actually iPad-based – Messac transports his tablet with him on trains, buses, and streets, and uses it to sketch subjects he sees and then transform them into light-hearted works that float between drawing and painting. He then prints them onto larger canvases that are about the height and width of a human, a few of which lean against the walls of his sun-bathed studio.

Peintre, sculpteur, scénographe, designer des costumes , le travail polymorphe de Messac est difficile à résumer. Ses créations vont de sculptures de marbre minimalists et abstraites à des costumes et mise en scène fantasques pour des ballets contemporains. Aujourd’hui , c’est sur son Ipad que naissent ses oeuvres. Sa tablette ne le quitte jamais, en train, métro, dans la rue, il l’emporte partout avec lui. C’est sur elle qu’il trace les croquis de tout ce qui l’inspire, avant de les transformer en créations joyeuses, oscillant entre dessin et peinture. Il les imprime ensuite sur de larges toiles de taille humaine. J’en admire quelques unes posées sur les murs de son atelier baigné de soleil.

Mr. Messac welcomed myself and several other journalists and Pompidou-affiliated employees into his studio bearing a forest green v-neck sweater and a congenial smile. He does not in the least embody the tortured, moody artist archetype synonymous with many of his predecessors – instead, he jokes around with his two assistants, rearranges chairs so everyone can sit, and offers his incoming guests glasses of orange juice. It would seem that his greatest concern is if we’ll have enough croissants to go around.

Ivan Messac me reçoit, avec plusieurs autres journalistes ainsi que des représentants du Musée Pompidou, revêtu d’un pull vert foncé et de son plus beau sourire. Il n’a rien du stéréoptype de l’artiste torturé et lunatique . Il plaisante , rajoute des chaises pour que tout le monde puisse s’asseoir, nous offre à chacun un verre de jus d’orange et des croissants.

And Mr. Messac’s work is much like his light-hearted personality: pastel swaths of color ooze across his canvases, serving as backgrounds against which vibrant drawings unfold, many of which express puns or word play. Which isn’t to say his work doesn’t hold meaning – in fact, it draws on several essential facets of the art history world, one of which is Ancient Greek sculpture – a primary influence for his upcoming project at the Pompidou.

Les oeuvres de Messac reflète sa personnalité enjouée: de grands aplats de pastel sur lesquels se déploient de vibrants dessins plein d’esprit . Son travail se nourrit de références à des mouvements majeurs de l’histoire de l’Art . Telle la sculpture Grecque Antique, qui imprègne fortement son projet en cours pour Pompidou.

The project’s birth can be traced back to the early 2000’s, when Mr. Messac began to feel a desire to switch from sculpture to painting. During an overnight stay in a sculpture museum, he briefly used his iPhone camera to see a few paces in front of him – and instead saw much, much more. He recalls noticing forms developing on the surface of the sculptures themselves, caused by shadows and folds in the sculptures, and he soon turned to drawing black and white sketches of classic and neo-classic marble sculptures to further explore these crepuscular shapes. While his current projects mark significant deviation from his sculpture works, they draw on the same material and art form that he used to work with.

Ce projet est né au début des années 2000, alors que Messac éprouve le désir de passer de la sculpture à la peinture. Se retrouvant une nuit dans un musée de Sculptures, il se sert de son Iphone pour capturer quelques images. Il découvre alors des formes qui se dessinent sur la surface des sculptures, nées des ombres et plis des oeuvres elles-mêmes. Il réalise alors des croquis en Noir et Blanc de ces statues de marbre classiques et néo classiques, pour explorer davantages les formes crépusculaires qui s’en dégagent. Ainsi, même si ses créations actuelles marquent une évolution significative par rapport à son travail sculpté, elles tirent leur inspiration du même matériau et des mêmes références formelles.

These drawings bring us up to the present day, where they will take the spotlight in a mural-sized work that Messac plans to paint, in the eye of the public, over the course of 20 days in Studio 13/16 of the Pompidou. The 6m x 2.5m canvas will be set up in the same room as a series of 4-day classes in choreography, acting, and writing, resulting in a completely immersive, multidisciplinary creative space. Studio 13/16 is the Pompidou’s learning space for teenagers, and Mr. Messac’s presence in the room will thus not only unite disparate forms of art, but it will also set off a certain exchange of creative thinking across generations. The project is intended to truly transcend of the limits of the artist’s studio.
Ces dessins nous emmènent jusqu’à aujoud’hui, où ils seront mis en lumière sur un grand mur de 6m X 2,5 m.

L’artiste peindra “en live” devant le public, 20 jours durant, au studio 13/16 de Pompidou. Cette “performance” prendra place dans un espace immersif de création multi –disciplinaire où se dérouleront en même temps des cours de chorégraphie, écriture et théatre. Le Studio 13/16 de Pompidou est un lieu d’appentissage dédié aux teenagers . L’intervention de Messac dans ce lieu sera un trait d’union entre différentes formes d’Art mais aussi un vecteur d’échange artistique transgénérationnel.

And what will he paint, you might ask? At the time, he didn’t quite know. Showing us a large set of thin brushes and acrylic paints, plus an assortment of miscellaneous objects that he plans to draw, including a stove-top espresso maker, Mr. Messac articulated that he didn’t have an extraordinarily concrete idea of what the painting would look like. He did, however, show us a rough sketch he’s working from, which consisted of 5 tablets of black and white stylized drawings of ancient Greek sculptures, surrounded by his signature splashes of pastel. Drawing heavily on the mural format and human movement in Matisse’s La Danse, as well as the Greek myth of Hades’ capture of Persephone, Mr. Messac hopes that the work will take on a life of its own after he starts, thanks to the creative energy of the space and his own imagination.

Et que va-t-il donc peindre? Il ne sait pas encore…En nous montrant toute une panoplie de pinceaux , de peintures acryliques et un assortiment d’objets éclectiques qu’il a prévu de dessiner- dont une cafetière en Aluminium , il nous annonce qu’il n’a pas encore d’idée précise de ce à quoi va ressembler sa peinture murale. Il nous montre, quand même, une ébauche sur laquelle il travaille, qui consiste en 5 tablettes de dessins stylisés de statues Grecques , entourées par des éclaboussures de pastel – sa signature. Sa création murale, inspirée par le mouvement de « la Danse » de Matisse ainsi que le mythe D’Hadès capturant Perséphone, prendra vie et deviendra une oeuvre à part entière au fur et à mesure de son avancée, boostée par l’énergie créative du studio 13/16.

Mr. Messac will be working on his piece on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 2 – 6 PM until November 13th. His process will also be open to the public every day during vacation except for Tuesday, from October 19th to November 2nd. Having fun is something Ivan Messac takes very seriously. His work is ceaselessly bright, playful, and spontaneous, and he can’t stress enough how important lightness is to him – in fact, one of the reasons he abandoned sculpture was due to the physical weightiness of his works and the stress it caused his shoulders. The lively joy that emanates from his works is something that’s not easy to come across in art – or, for that matter, in the world – today. The ebullience of both the artist and his collection promises a truly uplifting 20 days at the Pompidou – a project I can’t wait to watch unfold.

S’amuser est une faculté qu’Ivan Messac prend très au sérieux ! Son travail est lumineux, spontané, espiègle et, par dessus tout, empreint de légèreté. D’ailleurs, une des raisons pour lesquelles il a abandonné la sculpture est le poids physique des productions, trop lourdes pour ses épaules. La joie vive qui ressort de son Art apparait comme rare et providentielle dans le monde d’aujourd’hui. Le projet Messac avec le studio 13/16 de Pompidou promet d’être une bouffée d’air bénéfique … il me tarde de le découvrir!
